Weddings Gone Wild – Adventure Weddings
by Sharon Auld
What is an Adventure wedding, a wedding gone wild? I know what you are thinking, but this post is not about wild parties or wedding mishaps! It’s about something much more exciting, adventure weddings! What exactly is an adventure wedding you ask? Well, an adventure wedding typically involves some sort of recreational activity in the outdoors. Think heli-skiing, whitewater rafting, dogsledding, rock climbing or horseback riding. Really, an adventure wedding is whatever you want it to be, whatever you find to be fun and adventurous.
Before you start worrying that Grandma might miss out on your wedding day, you need to keep in mind that there are several ways to go about having an adventure wedding. One way is for only the couple and their witnesses to be involved in the adventurous activity and later meet up with friends and family at the reception. Another way is to provide an activity that everyone can partake in. Take for example a rafting adventure. The actual ceremony may take place by the shores of a river. Several rafts might transport the bride and groom, and their more adventurous guests down the river to the ceremony site, while other guests walk in. Or, maybe the wedding takes place in traditional fashion and only the bride and groom are swept down the river in a raft after the ceremony.
The key to an adventure wedding is to choose an activity that is meaningful to you as a couple. What activities do you both love and enjoy together? Are you both avid mountain bikers, cross country skiers, or hikers? Whatever it is, you can incorporate it into your big day. Say you both love downhill skiing. Why not have your wedding ceremony on the ski slopes of Lake Louise (with today’s technology the whole ceremony can be videotaped and no one will have to miss out) and then ski down to your awaiting friends and family before heading over to the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise for the reception?
One thing to bear in mind is that you and your guests need to be dressed appropriately for whatever activity you’ve got planned. This includes proper equipment and footwear! There is nothing worse than seeing someone in heels trying to maneuver over uneven terrain or see a guest shivering in the cold air. It’s a good idea to let your guests know beforehand, exactly what to bring to your wedding. With a thoughtful approach and a little extra planning you and all your guests can be comfortable!
An adventure wedding is your chance to reflect your personality as a couple; however, keep in mind that an adventure wedding is just that “adventurous”. Weather is often unpredictable especially in the mountains, so be prepared, have a contingency plan and a sense of humor! Always take the necessary precautions for your particular adventure, but have some fun too. There’s nothing wrong with the bride wearing a veil on her ski helmet!
